What Used to Be Engaging in School

Not too long ago, when I was in school, watching a video or film felt like a special treat. Before everyone had access to personal devices and endless entertainment options, a movie in class was exciting!

 Today, students have constant access to entertainment on their phones, and educational videos often feel boring by comparison. Their attention spans are shorter, and they tend to prefer short, fast‑paced content; even I find myself drawn to shorter videos now, despite growing up in a different educational context.

I often wonder what new technologies or innovations will emerge that could create another paradigm shift in education. The situation keeps changing, and I’m curious about what might come next.

    Hi! Your post made me reflect on why we set social media boundaries at home. This week, I allowed my daughter to show me some TikTok cooking and cleaning videos. I could not handle it for more than 20 minutes. A lot of content was outright silly, too. It's scary for me to think that children use TikTok. That is why it is not allowed in our house. In fact, my older children use Instagram as a group chat to stay in contact with their friends. I really hope that book-reading will not become a lost art.

    I also wonder what could be next and whether I will resist the change or embrace it. I can sit and watch TV shows and movies, but long-form content is really hard for me to engage with. However, short-form is easier for me to enjoy, whether for education or entertainment.

I believe that when students are actively engaged, they learn more deeply and retain more knowledge. Technology in the classroom plays a major role in achieving this goal; it opens creative pathways for participation, collaboration, and exploration. I’m grateful that the technologies introduced in this course have been so relevant to instruction. Some of the tools have given me ideas for improving my teaching and classroom interaction. When I registered for this course, I was not entirely sure what to expect in terms of its structure. Now that the class has begun, I am starting to see the value of the course and the many ways I will be able to apply the skills I learn, both professionally and personally. I do not consider myself highly technical, but I do enjoy learning to use various technological tools to support and enhance the work I do. I am genuinely excited to be part of this course.
