My Duolingo Experience Motivation in language learning plays an important role in the learning process. Learners are motivated for various kinds of reasons. These reasons often drive learners to experience the learning process differently. It is interesting to question how social media might help learners be motivated or remain motivated.  One of the tools that I used to improve my language skills as an undergraduate was Duolingo.   I’m not sure I can say Duolingo is very effective, but I do recall how it keeps me motivated to practice the language daily by sending me notifications and creating a competitive aspect with people I can be friends with on the app.   I think it was very effective in that sense, especially for people for whom learning a new language does not come naturally. I needed to improve my language skills at that time, and I would say that, to a certain extent, it helped me reach this goal by supporting daily practice and reflection on the langua...

Language learning and Digital Tools In foreign and second language learning, using a variety of digital tools is an effective way for students to maximize their exposure to the target language. I find social media especially useful because it allows learners to repeat, manipulate, and revisit new information in multiple formats. It makes learning enjoyable and gives students a sense of autonomy as they explore content and track their progress. However, I also recognize that these tools can be less effective when students are trying to understand more complex language concepts, such as different tense forms. When I taught high school, I often wondered why students did not seem to enjoy the interactive digital textbook. Looking back, I think one reason is that the tool was tightly aligned with the learning objectives and allowed teachers to monitor students’ progress. While this structure is helpful for assessment, it can take away some of the fun and freedom that students associ...

Reflections on the role of digital learning platforms

Reflections on the role of digital learning platforms As I reflect on the real role of digital learning spaces, I believe that technology should not simply deliver content; it should bring people together, support meaningful interaction, and create opportunities for learners to engage with ideas in ways that feel accessible, flexible, and relevant. When online spaces are used well, they connect learners to activities that increase understanding. They make information more manipulable, something learners can explore, revisit, and reshape. They also make resources more accessible across different settings and devices, allowing learning to continue beyond the classroom and into everyday life. In other words, technology in learning should not be about the tool itself. It should be about the connections it enables, the communities it builds, and the ways it empowers learners to take ownership of their learning across multiple environments.

Technology and learning

Image
Technology and learning This week, I’ve begun thinking more intentionally and reflecting more deeply on the role of technology in learning. It is easy to focus on the tools themselves, the apps, platforms, and features, and on finding creative ways to make activities engaging. Yet when the emphasis stays on technology rather than the learner, it can unintentionally create distance rather than connection. Through this week’s readings, I am beginning to reflect not only on how we use online tools, but on why we use them and what online spaces and activities are truly meant to accomplish in the learning process. Technology should not simply serve as a delivery system for content; it should act as a bridge connecting learners to meaningful experiences, fostering collaboration and encouraging exploration. When designed with intention, online spaces can transform learning into an active, participatory process. They allow learners to manipulate information, engage in dialogue, and constr...

From Overwhelmed to Empowered: A New Perspective on Online Communities

Image
From Overwhelmed to Empowered: A New Perspective on Online Communities One of the things I reflected on this week is how I am learning to self‑regulate my use of different social platforms. In the past, I often felt overwhelmed by the number of social media applications on my phone. Notifications felt intrusive, and I didn’t always feel in control of what I was seeing or why it was appearing. However, since I started using Reddit more intentionally, my perspective has shifted.  I joined communities that genuinely interest me and that I want to be part of. I even turned on notifications. Surprisingly, the notifications no longer bother me because they come from communities I enjoy and want to stay updated with. Instead of feeling overwhelmed, I feel more connected and more in control of my digital spaces. This experience made me realize that sometimes the issue isn’t the media tool itself. Instead, it may be the lack of control we feel when platforms push content we didn’...

What Is My Favorite Color? quiz: I couldn’t help but laugh and feel amazed.

Image
I’m really enjoying discovering some of the exciting technological tools introduced in this course. Each week opens the door to something new, and I’m beginning to appreciate how these tools can make learning more engaging and interactive. Last week, I explored the main page of WikiHow.com. Out of curiosity, I decided to take the “What Is My Favorite Color?” quiz under the Trending Now section to see how accurate or reliable it might be. I answered a few questions, not expecting much from it. To my surprise, the result was correct. My favorite color is yellow!   When the answer popped up on the screen, I couldn’t help but laugh and feel amazed. This small moment reminded me of one of the great things about technology. Sometimes learning and exploration lead to unexpected discoveries. Even simple tools can spark curiosity, encourage reflection, and make the learning process enjoyable. As I continue exploring more platforms in this course, I’m realizing how technolog...

Making Learning Fun and Interactive Through Technology

Image
Making Learning Fun and Interactive Through Technology Making learning fun and interactive has always been one of my core teaching philosophies. I believe that when students are actively engaged, they learn more deeply and retain more knowledge. Technology in the classroom plays a major role in achieving this goal; it opens creative pathways for participation, collaboration, and exploration. I’m grateful that the technologies introduced in this course have been so relevant to instruction. Some of the tools have given me ideas for improving my teaching and classroom interaction. Many of these platforms can be especially beneficial for foreign and second-language learning, where engagement and authentic communication are essential. One of my favorite tools so far is Padlet. I’m still exploring its features, but I’m amazed by how versatile and visually appealing it is. I recently practiced an activity with my husband using Padlet to design a warm‑up exercise for students. The ...

How Technology Is Transforming Foreign and Second Language Learning

Image
How Technology Is Transforming Foreign and Second Language Learning Recently, I’ve been reflecting on how technology is transforming foreign and second language learning. I often think back to my own language classes in my home country, where the grammar‑translation method dominated instruction. Today, digital tools and multimedia platforms have reshaped the learning experience, making it more engaging, interactive, and motivating, qualities that are essential for meaningful language acquisition. From my experience teaching foreign languages, I sometimes question the extent to which digital tools should be used in the classroom. I’ve noticed that when there are too many tools, they can distract students or create unnecessary complexity. However, when technology is used intentionally and thoughtfully, it can significantly enhance students’ speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. One of the most important aspects of learning a language is consistent use, especially ...
