From Overwhelmed to Empowered: A New Perspective on Online Communities
One of the
things I reflected on this week is how I am learning to self‑regulate my use of
different social platforms. In the past, I often felt overwhelmed by the number
of social media applications on my phone. Notifications felt intrusive, and I
didn’t always feel in control of what I was seeing or why it was appearing.
However, since I started using Reddit more intentionally, my perspective has shifted.
I joined communities that genuinely interest me and that I want to be part of. I even turned on notifications. Surprisingly, the notifications no longer bother me because they come from communities I enjoy and want to stay updated with. Instead of feeling overwhelmed, I feel more connected and more in control of my digital spaces.
This
experience made me realize that sometimes the issue isn’t the media tool
itself. Instead, it may be the lack of control we feel when platforms push
content we didn’t ask for or when we’re part of large networks that don’t
reflect our interests. When we choose communities intentionally rather than
letting the algorithm choose for us, social media becomes more meaningful,
manageable, and enjoyable.
I’m really
enjoying this new perspective, and I hope to continue discovering online
communities that align with my interests, values, and learning goals.
I agree with you! For me, social media is much more enjoyable when I have more control over what I consume. I have decreased my time on other platforms that don't allow me as much control over what I see and engage with. Reddit has become my platform of choice, and I don't find myself "doomscrolling" as I do on other platforms.
