My Duolingo Experience

Motivation in language learning plays an important role in the learning process. Learners are motivated for various kinds of reasons. These reasons often drive learners to experience the learning process differently.

It is interesting to question how social media might help learners be motivated or remain motivated.

 One of the tools that I used to improve my language skills as an undergraduate was Duolingo.



 I’m not sure I can say Duolingo is very effective, but I do recall how it keeps me motivated to practice the language daily by sending me notifications and creating a competitive aspect with people I can be friends with on the app.

 I think it was very effective in that sense, especially for people for whom learning a new language does not come naturally. I needed to improve my language skills at that time, and I would say that, to a certain extent, it helped me reach this goal by supporting daily practice and reflection on the language.

Back in my country, we used to pay per minute just to talk to someone on the phone, and international calls were even more expensive. When Facebook arrived, many people in my social circle were hesitant to use it because they feared talking to strangers or worried about the potential negative impacts. I believe that when students are actively engaged, they learn more deeply and retain more knowledge. Technology in the classroom plays a major role in achieving this goal; it opens creative pathways for participation, collaboration, and exploration. I’m grateful that the technologies introduced in this course have been so relevant to instruction. Some of the tools have given me ideas for improving my teaching and classroom interaction.
