Witnessing the Evolution of Technology

Witnessing the Evolution of Technology

I remember when Facebook first appeared. Back in my country, we used to pay per minute just to talk to someone on the phone, and international calls were even more expensive. When Facebook arrived, many people in my social circle were hesitant to use it because they feared talking to strangers or worried about the potential negative impacts. Over time, perspectives shifted, and people began to see that social media could also be used for meaningful, positive purposes.

Today, technology feels so familiar that new inventions don’t always seem as impressive as they once did. But I believe that when we understand how to navigate these tools, the fear surrounding them becomes easier to manage. When we take control of how we use technology, rather than letting it control us, it becomes a powerful resource for connection, learning, and sharing knowledge. That is why staying up to date with current technology is so important.

What also fascinates me is how technology influences so many aspects of our daily lives. It creates a ripple effect. Recently, I attended an educational conference in Los Angeles, and something caught my attention. It wasn’t my first time seeing a self‑driving car, but seeing so many of them operating smoothly in a large, busy city was worth noting. During a city tour, the tour guide even encouraged us to try one during our stay.

I always thought I wasn’t afraid of trying new technologies, but that moment made me question myself. I couldn’t imagine sitting in a car without a driver. I wasn’t sure if it was because I didn’t trust technology or because I didn’t trust my life in its hands. But I couldn’t help noticing the flawlessness of their driving.  In fact, what I witnessed was even better than what I saw from some drivers who don’t always follow the rules.

In the end, I guess I still have to face my fears when it comes to technology. Who knows, just like I once couldn’t imagine talking to someone face‑to‑face through a phone, something that once felt impossible, maybe in the near future I won’t be able to imagine driving long distances without a self‑driving car.

Despite my hesitation to fully trust new inventions, I can’t deny how fascinating and mind‑blowing they are. I’m looking forward to seeing what incredible innovations come next.

  1. I too share your fear of self-driving cars! In my own town, I am starting to see more and more of them out and about. I tell myself "I would never do that!" but after hearing about your own experiences and reflections on fear of technology, I am now reconsidering my initial judgement. Maybe I should face that fear of the technological unknown, and give it a try? As technology advances, so will society. It will be interesting to see what else develops, and what new technological fears we will encounter in our lives as it continues to expand.
